The 2012 gag grouper season ended on October 31st and by our accounts it was a huge success. While we don’t catch as many gag’s as they do in other places, Orange Beach is becoming more of a target destination for this recovering fishery.

Typically speaking we may not catch the numbers of groupers that they might in other places but the ones we catch ate usually large and put up a heck of a fight! The fish can grow up to 80 pounds but fish over 30 pounds are considered a trophy.

To catch a big one we use different types of live and dead baits to entice one into striking. You must be ready to reel when the fish hits to make sure the circle hook rotates in to the corner of the jaw and then it’s up to you to crank!
